The Tableau Developer on the Opportunity Analytics team will focus primarily on developing and maintaining datasets for optimal Tableau performance, as well as collaborating with colleagues to build and maintain visualizations that may evolve and be enhanced over time. This includes writing code not only to move data and leverage existing cloud-based APIs for data enrichment, but also to conduct post-processing to enhance extracted datasets with calculations that create new variables for analytic purposes within and outside of Tableau. This position will also be responsible for creating workbook templates and conducting quality reviews once populated. This will be a lead, individual contributor role with opportunities to teach and mentor colleagues within the broader department.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Extract and process data from in-house healthcare claims and external public use data sources
  • Collaborate with colleagues to build scalable, repeatable Tableau-based processes that enhance the team's capability and analytic product portfolio
  • Identify patterns and meaningful insights from data by creating advanced, interactive visualizations using Tableau Desktop Professional
  • Optimize SQL or Python code and data schemas to improve Tableau performance
  • Examine performance issues with data extracts and related schemas and resolve them
  • Find the key areas of automation to make the business process of deploying and/or presenting Tableau workbooks a smooth experience
  • Leverage Tableau features and challenge the status quo while maintaining a high attention to detail
  • Develop reference documents for source code and report elements used in the final workbook to support stakeholder adoption and appropriate data interpretation
  • Collaborate within cross-disciplinary research and data science teams including business-facing leaders and domain subject matter experts
  • Collaborate with colleagues to derive recommendations and guidance based on data insights
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to a range of audiences

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience developing ETL-related code and repeatable processes using SQL (preferred) or Python with health care data including, but not limited to, medical and pharmacy claims, electronic medical records, and public-use datasets such as US census data
  • 3+ years of experience working with Tableau Server and Tableau Desktop Professional
  • 3+ years of experience translating research questions or business requirements into a Tableau interactive workbook
  • 1+ year working in a Cloud-based environment, preferably Azure
  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field
  • Tableau Desktop Associate
  • Problem-solving skills to resolve issues that appear during development
  • Experience applying a broad range of statistical, mathematical, or computational approaches using data to solve problems
  • Experience with data blending in Tableau
  • Familiarity with Tableau Reader and how it's used with the Tableau Server environment
  • Familiarity with developing in a DataBricks Azure cloud environment
  • Experience with inferential statistics and creating views that leverage statistical measures appropriately (e.g., confidence intervals, measures of central tendency, correlations)
  • Written and communication skills

Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $79,700 to $142,600.
