The Vice President of Strategy is accountable for leading strategic initiatives, including business planning and reporting to ensure alignment and achievement of business priorities. The Vice President will be a member of the Community and State Senior Leadership Team and will be expected to interface with executive leaders within the organization and across the enterprise to provide direction and decision making. This role will report directly to the CEO of the Community & State segment. This individual will oversee the Chief of Staff, Strategy and Competitive Intelligence teams, and work across functions to lead the organizations technical / digital strategy and enterprise outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development of competitive and market analysis and research to inform innovative, industry-leading strategies, development and/or initiatives
  • Proactively identify market trends, changes in competitive landscape, and new regulatory conditions that create emerging opportunities or disrupt Community and State's strategic positioning
  • Partner with enterprise executives to develop strategic hypotheses and prioritize options
  • Collaborate with Finance and C&S Executive Leaders to ensure Community and State is investing in and creating market-leading value propositions
  • Develop cascading communication plans from Executive Team to ensure high-level strategic plan is understood
  • Oversee execution of M&A activities and integration of acquired businesses
  • Advocate and communicate corporate strategy within the company
  • Work with senior corporate and business unit executives in support of the annual strategic planning process, portfolio management, and growth initiatives
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to ensure alignment in support of our key growth strategies
  • Lead the sourcing, evaluation and development of the strategic rationale for business opportunities
  • Develop and deliver a variety of communications to internal (senior executives and employees) and external audiences
  • Manage direct reports, develop talent and build an effective organization
  • Build relationships and effectively interface with UHG constituents across functions and responsibilities including senior executives and marketing, sales, product, human resources, finance and operations departments
  • Provide strategic thought leadership and analytical rigor supporting business decisions

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree & 15 + years of relevant work experience
  • Experience leading corporate strategy, strategic planning and portfolio management functions, working with leaders at the business unit and corporate levels
  • Extensive knowledge and experience within the global healthcare insurance and /or delivery market
  • Experience interacting and navigating across a matrixed organization, in particular at a C-Suite level
  • M&A and deal-making background with experience in deal sourcing, cultivating relationships with target companies, due diligence, modeling, negotiating and closing transactions and post-merger integration management activities
  • A leader with strong strategic and creative thinking, work ethic, business acumen, organizational, project management and decision-making skills
  • Ability to establish strong working relationships both inside and outside UHG, across all levels of management; ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Experience with developing and delivering effective C-level and Board level presentations
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills; creates a climate where people are motivated to be their best to help the organization achieve its objectives
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines simultaneously
  • Strong relationship building skills and ability to communicate proactively and effectively with diverse stakeholders inside and outside the organization
  • Experience working effectively and independently in a flexible, unstructured environment and navigate in ambiguous situations
  • Superior quantitative, analytic and financial modeling skills
  • High ethical standards; excellent judgment; personal/professional integrity and proven discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information
  • Team player with strong attention to detail
  • Travel and work schedule flexibility

Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $225,000 to $280,000. The role is also eligible to participate in UHG's annual bonus and long-term incentive plans.
